The Bride of the Iron Don

I was supposed to marry a doctor. I married the iron don instead. Emilia Genovese is twenty-seven, a forensic accountant, and sitting in a chapel in Little Italy at two in the morning, being handed by her own uncle to Tommaso Recchia — the man who has run the Great Lakes shipping union for twenty years without ever being photographed shaking hands with anybody. Her uncle owed him money. She was the money. Tommaso doesn't want a wife. He wants the paper trail a legal spouse provides. Emilia is supposed to sit at the end of the table and be quiet. Instead she opens the ledger on day four and starts reading. Three months later she knows more about his business than anybody alive, and the Chicago family has noticed. When they try to kill him at a charity dinner, Emilia is the one who spots the shooter eight seconds early. She saves his life. He starts telling her the truth. I did not come here to be saved. I came here to take it apart. I gave him five years. He said yes.
