The Bodyguard He Left Behind

Eight years ago, Eli Voss and Marcus Devenish were on the same detail in Sarajevo. They were also, quietly, in love. Then the principal died, the inquiry wanted a name, and Marcus gave them his. He took the discharge. Eli stayed. Now Eli runs a two-man protective firm out of a garage in Norfolk. On a Tuesday, Marcus walks in with a client: a war-crimes witness who needs to get to The Hague alive. Three weeks. Four countries. Motels with one bed, first by accident, then not. There's a lot they should have said in 2016, and the whole of Austria to say it in, and a border crossing that stops being hypothetical somewhere outside Ljubljana. The witness testifies. Marcus is cleared. He's offered his rank back. He asks for a job instead.
