Under the varnish, the wrong hand. Sabine Aubert restores paintings for a living and finds a forgery about once a decade. The one under her scalpel in Paris is worth eleven days of her life to a man named Yegor Volkov, brigadier of a Bratva line that runs money through Geneva auction houses. He doesn't ask her to come. He doesn't ask at all. Eleven days in a house in the Ardennes with a canvas, a deadline, and a lock on the outside of her door. She tries the window on day six and gets four metres. He catches her, and after that nothing in the house is about the painting. When a rival crew hits the house on day nine, Sabine knows the corridor layout better than he does, and that is the first time he looks at her like an equal.
