Stealing the Boss of the Bratva

Maya Novak audits shipping companies for a living. She's good at it, and good at not asking who writes the checks. Twelve days into her Munich contract, she finds four lines from 1997 that don't reconcile. She photocopies them after hours, because she wants to know. The man standing in the doorway when she turns around signs the paychecks. He runs a bratva, and he has one week to choose a wife before his council starts choosing for him. He could fire her. He could pay her. He could do the other thing. He marries her instead. Nine days later. Two witnesses, both armed, one registry office in Munich. Maya said yes because a woman doesn't tell a pakhan no. She wasn't planning on liking him. She was planning on finding out what his dead wife paid a man in Prague. And what it's going to cost him when she does.
