Simone

Simone Ferrer plays piano well enough to be useful, which is how she ends up accompanying the Easter Mass for the Ricci family — the family that runs the north docks and half the silence at San Ambrosio Catholic. Luca Ricci is gentle with her. His uncle is not. Between rehearsals, Simone starts carrying envelopes into the choir loft, and then she starts reading the names on them, and then she signs a statement about a fire she did not see. What she does next she does alone, in a stone room, to a priest who never asked her for anything. A high school capo romance about a girl who says yes too many times and then says no exactly once.
