About this book

Verena Copeby can read a rotted core through a perfect skin. She grades sponges for a living on the last independent dock in Perdido Harbor, one slow squeeze of her hand and she knows what is sound all the way through and what will collapse the first time the world leans on it. She thought she knew her husband the same way. Then the whole town found out about his affair before she did, on the big screen at the Blessing of the Fleet, with their daughter's hand in hers and the cameras already rolling.

Cassius Ethercroft had everything. The ice house, the fuel dock, the old fish auction, a seat at the head of every table in the harbor, and a wife who loved him. He gave eight months of himself to another woman and lied about all of it, and the morning the screen went bright the bank called his note, the co-op voted him out, and the man who ran the waterfront lost the waterfront. He does not get to say he was punished enough. He built the thing that broke his family with his own two hands.

But Verena's grader's eye keeps snagging on the shape of his ruin, because it is too clean, too perfectly timed, and the more she presses the more she feels the rot under someone else's polish. Somebody wanted the docks to fall so they could buy them cheap, and they used her humiliation to do it. Finding out who does not un-break the vow Cassius broke. It only changes what she decides to do standing in the wreck of it, on her own terms and no one else's.

He has to earn her back with everything he has left, which is almost nothing, and prove it in deeds when no one is watching and there is nothing left to win. And Verena has to decide whether a thing that broke this badly can be graded sound again, or whether some cores never come back.
