The System has finally offered Cole Merritt a fair deal, and that is the worst thing that has ever happened to him. Nine hundred and eleven miles of dark stand between the Interconnected Region and a voice on the wire that has been reading bearings into an empty continent for two years. The corridor west is funded for ninety miles. The region voted to build two hundred. And out at the end of the line, past the last lamp, a survey nobody can explain, a transit still level after two winters, and a field book buried in a biscuit tin by somebody who did the work properly when there was nobody left to see it.
