Salvation of the Sinner

Anya Solberg is a forensic accountant, careful with everything except her own life, and she has been mapping the Zarkov Bratva's offshore money for eleven months for the FBI. Ilya Zarkov is the family's second son, kept out of the way because he reads too much and shoots too slow — and he has been quietly sabotaging his own family's accounts for two years, hoping to make his brother don and get out alive. When Anya's apartment is searched, the FBI moves her into protective custody in a secured building in Portland. Ilya lives two floors up. Neither of them knows who the other is at first. When they find out, Ilya offers her a deal: the entire offshore structure, on paper, in exchange for sparing his mother. Anya accepts, on the record, in writing. For four months they live in the same building on opposite sides of a case. Then Ilya's brother finds the file, and the life they've been not naming comes to an end. Anya testifies anyway. Ilya takes fourteen months. When he gets off the bus, she's waiting in the rain.
