Nothing Gold in Ashville

Goldie Vestal has spent four years at the night desk of the Sunset Motel, walking home at dawn past the clubhouse where the Hollow Bones keep their secrets. She is twenty-three, untouched, and she has learned to be careful in a town that punishes curiosity. When the office burns down, the club offers her a job cleaning the quarry office, and the vice president, Judah Craven, does not pretend the job is anything but what it is. He has been paying her mother's taxes for six years without asking her. He tells her one true thing before he tells her anything else: what he did, and why, and who it was. They have one winter. By spring she is pregnant, and by summer he is on trial — not for something he didn't do. Goldie testifies honestly, stays in Ashville, and raises a daughter four miles from the courthouse. Eleven years is a long time to water a window box. He comes home anyway, and she is standing on the porch with the child he has only ever seen through glass.
