My Sister Stole Everything

You can burn a new brand over an old one. You can run a fresh iron across a steer's hide and register the new mark at the county and swear on paper it was always yours. But the scar tissue underneath never lies. Run your thumb across it and you feel the ridge of the old iron the new burn tried to bury. I read brands for a living. I know a stolen mark when I feel one. And my sister stole everything I had, and re-branded all of it, and never once thought the one person alive who could read the truth under her lie would come home to do it.

Three years ago Fayrene took the ranch our grandmother meant for me. She took the brand my family had run for four generations. She took the man I was going to marry. And when I fought it, she re-wrote the story so the whole county remembers me as the thief who ran, the liar, the one who broke a dying woman's heart. She had my inspector's commission pulled and my trade gutted. She let our grandmother die believing the worst of me.
