Ten years ago, he left without a word. Now he's back, and every morning there's something new on her doorstep.

Paloma Ruiz runs the flower shop on the corner of Birch Street. Valentine's Day is her busiest week of the year, and she absolutely does not have time for Rafael Cruz.

Rafa is a chupacabra, with quills down his spine and eyes made for the dark. Contrary to legend, he's never hurt a goat in his life. A decade ago he vanished the week before Valentine's Day, leaving nothing but frozen roses on her step. He says there was a letter. She never found one.

Now he's home, he's staying, and the reason he left is coming back too. This time Paloma won't let him run.
