Mabel

Mabel Truit has serviced the same boats on the same island for forty years. She knows every owner, every engine, every lie. When a charter captain dies in his own engine room, the insurance company calls it an accident. Mabel serviced that engine three weeks ago. She knows it wasn't. Following the maintenance logs she signed herself, she uncovers a smuggling route that runs through the summer charter fleet — and every boat owner she trusts has something to hide. At the haul-out, with the harbour crane idling, she corners the killer between two hulls. A we-solve-murders mystery for readers who like their clues oily, their amateur sleuth unsentimental, and their harbour water cold.
