Judged by the Whole World

Rosanna Mireleigh grabbed her nephew out of the path of a rolling tanker, and forty-one seconds of it went up online cut to look like she had hurt him. By morning the clip had twenty-two million views and a hashtag. By nightfall the whole world had decided who she was, and the one man who could have stood up and said it was a lie stood in his glass office and said nothing.

She had spent eleven years married to Leland Mireleigh's money and his machine, and she had spent her working life on scaffolds, laying lime plaster coat by coat, learning by the knock of a knuckle the one thing the internet never learned about her: a wall can wear a perfect face over a hollow, and only the hand that raps it knows the difference. When the world came knocking, her own husband read the smooth surface and believed it. He worried about the company. He managed the exposure. He did not put his body between his wife and the mob, and that was the wall that came down.

So Rosanna went home to the homestead her great-grandparents raised out of the mud, and she rebuilt, in public, with her hands, while a town that had knocked on her like she was hollow watched to see if she would crack. And when the uncut video finally surfaced and the forensic proof came out that the clip had been cut on purpose, and the money trail led back to the people who profited from her ruin, the same world that judged her had to take it back.

But being proven innocent does not put a marriage back together. Leland has to do the one thing his billions cannot buy: stand up in front of the same world that judged her and answer for the husband who did not. And Rosanna has to decide whether a man who read her wrong once can be trusted to lay the next coat true, or whether some walls are better left down.
