His Silent Bride

Rosalia Bruno has not spoken in twenty years. Her father married her to the Moretti heir because a bride who cannot testify is the safest bride in Sicily. Matteo Moretti expected a doll. He got a woman who reads lips across a crowded room and memorizes every face that enters the house. She leaves him index cards instead of conversation, and he starts leaving cards back. Then a bomb goes off at his fish market, and Rosalia realizes she has been watching the real killer for weeks, from a balcony, in silence. She cannot say it. She can write it. One card on his pillow and a marriage of convenience becomes a war between a man who has never had to listen and a woman who has never been heard.
