Her Wild Reckoning

Poppy Tregaskis is the last reckoner of the Wild — she audits magical debts and settles them before they curdle. She is very good at her job and very bad at keeping her own accounts. When a debt her mother left behind comes due, it is called in by the Wild itself, in the shape of a man: Kit Northwind, an untethered forest spirit owed thirteen years of Poppy's life. He doesn't want them. He wants her help becoming mortal, so he can stop collecting anyone ever again. The deal: five bargains with five elder spirits, and the debt is forgiven. It sounds simple. Then the fourth elder asks for a feast, and Poppy gives more than she meant to, and Kit pretends not to notice. The fifth elder will not negotiate. The oldest thing in the wood wants a claim, a human willing to name what she wants. Poppy is a reckoner. She decides where the accounts close.
