Her Stubborn Lieutenant

Deputy coroner Maeve Sandoval has signed a thousand death certificates and never had one walk in the door. Lieutenant Owen Brand is supposed to be two years dead in a country he can't name on paper. He watched a man die wearing his tags, and somebody has been paying benefits to a version of him that doesn't exist — one funeral home at a time. It turns out the county morgue is where the paperwork goes to die. It turns out the fraud runs through a bank the whole county loves. Maeve can keep a living man in a cold drawer for a week. She can't keep him alive once the ring realizes he came back. At midnight, in a room full of the dead, they're both going to fit — if she has to make them.
