Her Dishonest Enforcer

Kansas City, 1887. Della Marsh has kept the Dempsey outfit's books for six years and copied their cattle contracts for two, one page a month, in envelopes addressed to her aunt. She isn't a crusader. She started because of a drover who died in a stockyard, and she kept going because it turns out she's good at it. Then Frank Dempsey sends his enforcer up from Fort Worth to find the leak. Bishop Reyes was raised in the outfit. He's supposed to find the leak and put them in the Missouri River. Instead he finds a woman who can read a cattle bill three different ways, and he finds out that Frank has been selling the outfit's southern herd rights to a Denver concern that intends to run the Dempseys off the range entirely. Bishop doesn't hand Della over. He does something worse. He names the wrong man, lets the outfit deal with him, and hopes he can tell Della the truth before she runs. She runs anyway. She takes the contracts with her, and Bishop follows, because if he doesn't, Frank's men will.
