He Returned From the Grave for Her

She buried him in 1974 and built a life on the grave. Fifty years later, he walked into her winery. Elena Marchetti was married at nineteen to Salvatore DiFazio, and widowed at nineteen on the same night. She spent the next half-century running his family's vineyards, feeding his cellars, and never once asking the questions she knew better than to ask. Then he came back. Older. Younger. Undead. Still wearing the tuxedo he died in. The treaty that killed him never gave him a wife. He's come to collect — and the same family that shot him is back in Sicily, burning her harvest one field at a time. She says she'll marry him again. On her terms. As co-head. No vows she'll have to keep alone. At sunrise on the terrace of the Marchetti vineyard, she'll keep the ones she means. This time she isn't a girl. This time she chooses.
