Every Rule I Break

I took the job because it was remote. I stayed because Ellis Cross asked me to lead it in person, and I needed the money more than I needed my rules. He's not loud about what he wants. He moves my desk to a floor with a lock. He changes my start time so I can drive my mother to treatment. He pays a deductible I never told him about and never mentions it again. I know exactly what this looks like. Then a coworker files a complaint, and Ellis does the one thing no CEO in this city has ever done: he puts it on the record, in writing, and offers to resign if the review finds against us. It didn't. He didn't. I finished the contract and negotiated the permanent offer myself — because I want the job, and I want him, and I am done letting those two things be a secret.
