*Temporary's an interesting choice for a nameplate.* Leo Vasquez sets his bag on the desk and looks at it. Metal, black lettering on silver, screwed into the cheap wood divider like it belonged there. Someone made it on purpose. He got to the 37th floor forty-five minutes early hoping to settle in before anyone watched him do it, and the nameplate has already ruined that. He is the new senior editor at The Hearth, hired in from outside over a features writer who wanted the job badly. Nina Patel reads his clips and tells him the samples felt like someone who had never actually worked in a newsroom. She is not wrong about the file, only about why. Because the resume that got Leo through the door is not honest. *I lied on my resume. Filled in the gaps with jobs I never had, dates that don't add up.* He dropped out of college and worked three jobs to take care of his brother, and he took this one for the salary and, much more, the insurance.
