About this book
Nothing happens to her in that house. He decides it in the doorway, before anybody has said her name, and he holds the line against his own don for the length of the book.
Rain clicks against the library windows like a drunk man's fingernails. Dante Mancini comes in through the brownstone's rear entrance and catches the smell before anything else: old leather, the don's cologne, and the sour tang of fear belonging to the man standing with his hat in his hands.
The father is easy to read. Middle fifties, soft around the middle, the kind of man who borrowed against a future he never intended to deliver. He holds the fedora like a rosary, working the brim between thumb and forefinger until the felt goes shiny. Sweat at the hairline despite the autumn chill coming through the glass.
The woman beside him is not easy to read at all.
Dante stops three feet inside the door and lets it close behind him. She stands with her spine straight and her hands clasped at her waist, in a black dress that cost eighty dollars and fits her as though she borrowed it from a kinder life. Ink-black hair pinned tight enough to pull at the corners of her eyes.
What follows: a door he cannot open, a shipment they blame on the wrong man, a number he has to use, a dinner table full of wolves, a proposal that is not one, an ambush, and a wound he does not see coming.
*A fugitive. A traitor. A dead man walking.*
*He's not a traitor.*
*He's been accused. The evidence is on the table.*
Nothing happens to her in that house. That is what he decided in the doorway. By the last chapter the sentence has turned itself inside out, because she is the one standing in the doorway, and it is Dante that nothing is going to happen to, and she has made that decision in front of every man in the room.
