Crashing the Gilded Room

Junie Okafor has been in the room for four years. She knows the coffee order, the seating chart, and which of the three principals is lying about which. Ellis Vance runs the money. Dorian Song runs the list. Benoît Aimes runs the room — the actual room, the one two floors below the one on the plan. When the club's lawyer resigns without notice, Junie is asked to take the minutes on a restructuring that will quietly remove a partner. She reads the draft. She takes the minutes. Then she starts a second set. Nine weeks of decisions made in rooms that do not exist. A private dinner with one of them. A floor plan from another. A raise offered by the third, in an envelope, at her desk, at eight in the morning. On signing night, Junie tables her own version. She makes them vote on the record.
