Collecting the Underboss

Renata Salci audits books for a living. She is very good at noticing the line that doesn't belong. The line that doesn't belong is her father's name. Ilias Kovalenko runs a shipping company and an underboss's balance sheet, and he offers Renata a deal: audit us, and we'll hand you the men who did it. One name a week. His lieutenants — Demir, who holds the docks; Santo, who holds the funerals — make their own offers behind his back. Renata says yes to all three, then starts a file on every one of them. Eight weeks. One subpoena. When Ilias finds his name in her notebook, the case burns — and so does the ledger, because Renata signed it too. She keeps the only thing that can't be burned: three written statements, held in escrow. And the company.
