She was supposed to be building a financial case. Eight months of accounts, wire transfers and property holdings, all of it clean, all of it filed, and none of it enough to arrest anybody. *You're not hearing me, Captain.* Maya Cortez plants both palms on the edge of the desk and leans forward. The wood is cold, scarred by years of coffee rings and file folders. Morning light cuts stripes through the blinds, across Reyes standing at the far wall with his arms folded, and across a stack of case files that represents eight months of her life poured into a man she has never met. The captain does not look up from the open folder. She turns a page, slow and deliberate, the way she does when she is buying time to think. *I hear you fine, Cortez. I just don't agree.* *I've been on his finances for eight months. I know every account he's ever touched, every wire transfer, every real estate holding from here to the coast.* Maya keeps her voice even, the way her father taught her. Calm when you are winning. Calmer when you are not. The captain closes the folder and offers her a choice that is not a choice: drop it, or go in. Nobody in that room says the word undercover out loud, because saying it would require somebody to sign something.
