About this book

Sixteen hours of no sleep and a MetroCard with $2.83 left on it. That is what gets Natalie Vance into the lobby of Bitterwood Group on a Monday morning, with no copy of her resume and no backup plan. She has a grandmother in a lavender cardigan who does not know her nursing home is two months behind on payments, and a brother who stopped answering her calls three weeks ago. The executive assistant on the 42nd floor sends her down to the 41st, to a conference room that turns out to be an empty room on a dead floor with a rattling vent in the ceiling. Through that vent Natalie hears a conversation she was not meant to hear, about an estate tied up in litigation and a project someone will not sign off on. Then she goes back up, sits down late, and finds the mistake on line 47 of the Q4 projections. She is hired on the spot. The woman who sent her downstairs is not kept on. Declan Thorncroft has silver-gray eyes, a thin scar across his left jaw like a crack in marble, and a way of watching people as though he has not decided whether to identify them or crush them. He quietly pays for her grandmother's room upgrade. He tells her his father killed himself after a deal collapsed, and that he knows what losing family to ruin looks like. What he does not say is that he has been asking about her father. Not her mother. Not her grandmother. Her father, who was an accountant at Warner and Associates, and who was in the room when the deal that ruined Declan's family went wrong. *My father blew his brains out after your father's company destroyed ours.* And Leo, her brother, the gambler she has been leaving voicemails for, turns up in Bitterwood's own contact list, needing money, having already said too much to exactly the wrong person. A workplace billionaire romance about ten years of someone else's grief, an inheritance neither of them chose, a bitter drink made sweet, and what it takes to stop being the thing you inherited. It ends over a casserole with orange zest and a Negroni that still needs more orange; closed-door.
