The Kingpin's Captive

Giulia Conti is stirring sauce in a cramped Brooklyn kitchen when her brother finally says the number. She hears twelve and assumes twelve hundred. He means eighty thousand. Enzo borrowed it from the Morettis. He talked his way into their game on somebody else's name, lost, and ran. Two black sedans are idling under the flickering streetlamp at the corner. Lia tells her mother she needs something from the bodega, walks down the stoop with her hands visible and empty, and asks to speak to whoever is in charge. A man in a black suit hands her a burner phone. Dante Moretti does not pretend the terms are negotiable. Loan issued three weeks ago. Thirty percent interest a week, due every Sunday. By tomorrow her brother owes a hundred and four thousand, and Enzo is already gone, lost somewhere in Jersey that afternoon, which makes her the collateral. She stays in the house until he surfaces or the debt is paid. The house swallows sound. Marble floors. Bookshelves whose spines are too uniform to have been read. A guard named Luc who answers *No* when she asks whether she is allowed to close her own door. A camera in her bedroom ceiling that nobody tells her about. So she starts counting: doors, guards, minutes. She takes a knife from a drawer and slides it up her sleeve against the inside of her wrist. What she does not plan for is the child in the garden with the stuffed rabbit and the missing front tooth, or the half-second in which a man with grey, empty eyes goes soft saying his daughter's name. Or his brother, who wants everything Dante has and is not inclined to wait. Or what she will eventually learn about the men who came to her father's door when she was twelve years old, and who sent them. This is a dark mafia romance about a debt that was never hers, a captor whose worst crime is not the one she was expecting, and a woman who keeps score. The romance is closed-door.
