The Rookie's Bargain

Three months of academy. Two weeks at the county training center. And now a red brick station squatting in the Port Townsend fog like it grew there. Dashiell O'Shea is the probationary firefighter, and he is carrying two things nobody at Station 6 knows about. The first is that he lied his way through the medical screening. The second buzzes in his pocket on his first morning: an oncology appointment reminder for Tobias O'Shea. Toby is his little brother. The insurance is why Dash took this job. Graham Lockwood is not the rookie. He is the veteran assigned as Dash's training officer, salt-and-pepper stubble, black coffee, a limp he does not explain. He looks through Dash the way you look through a window you do not plan to clean, tells him gear is in bay two, and goes back inside. What the captain told Dash beforehand was the important part. Two years ago Graham lost a probie in a ceiling collapse. He pulled the kid out. It was too late. *"He's not friendly. But he'll keep you alive."* The bargain the two of them strike is brutally practical, and Graham says the quiet part aloud: if Dash dies, Toby does not get his treatment, and if Graham loses another probie he does not get to keep his job or his sanity. Then it becomes something else, and then it becomes a promise with a rule attached — no waiting for the right moment, no letting anything fester, you feel something shift and you say it out loud, immediately. Which is the one term Dash cannot keep. Toby has skipped chemo and made his brother swear to say nothing, and every day Dash does not tell Graham is a day he is breaking the only condition that mattered. A small-town MM firefighter romance about a man holding a secret that is not his, a mentor who has already buried one person he was supposed to bring home, and a family illness that no amount of overtime quite covers. Closed-door, with an ending built out of weekend visits, plastic chairs and a long drive taken the long way.
