About this book
Derek Marchetti scores off Cooper Bishop's pass, the bench empties, and the two of them end up laughing in the corner under a pile of gloves and sticks.
Then the puck drops again.
Number 14 comes off the bench hard, with no pretence of playing the puck. Derek's head is down. Cooper sees it the way you see a car drift into your lane, too fast to stop and too clear to misunderstand.
His body makes a choice before his brain catches up. His left skate pushes sideways. Not toward the hit. Away.
*The sound was wet and wrong, like a branch snapping in a frozen forest.*
Two years on, Cooper is thirty-six, his right knee is a low constant complaint he has learned to ignore and never silence, and Derek is an assistant coach whose limp is worse in the mornings. And neither of them says anything about it.
Then the club hires a new physiotherapist.
Tessa Harper has watched Cooper on film for a decade, sat in the stands the day before she started, and counted the three shifts where he did not engage in the corner.
*I don't care about your legacy, Mr. Bishop. I care about whether you can finish the season without blowing out that knee.*
She is also Derek Marchetti's sister, and she did not take this job only to tape ankles.
What she has is a partial audio file her brother will not release in full, a gap where a page of Cooper's file should be, and a problem that keeps getting worse: the man she is supposed to be building a case against spends his Saturdays on a pediatric oncology ward, and puts a kid's stick-figure drawing in his locker.
*You're either my sister, or you're his.*
*I can be both.*
*No. Not anymore.*
What Cooper finally admits is smaller and worse than anyone guessed. He saw a flash of movement in his peripheral vision, did not know what it was, and braced for impact instead of stepping into it. He chose himself, and Derek paid for it.
After that come a press conference nobody planned, a letter signed like a goodbye, a drive of forty miles up a logging road in the sleet toward a cabin by a lake, and a man on his knees at Gate 11 while an agent asks whether the passenger is still boarding.
This is a sports romance about a two-second decision: an ageing winger on a knee that will not hold, a physiotherapist caught between her brother and the truth, a twenty-three-year-old circling the veteran's roster spot, and a confession that costs far more than a suspension would have. The romance is closed-door.
