The Linemate's Mistake

Finn Callahan gets to the rink before anyone else because he cannot sleep, and because the hallway he walks down to get there is lined with framed photographs of every captain the club has had since 1972. His father is not among them. Mike Callahan played two seasons in the minors, blew a knee, and spent the rest of his life looking at pictures of his son in an NHL sweater and saying *pretty good for a soft kid* in a voice that made soft sound like a disease. There is a new name on the first line. *The kid from the Marlies trade.* Rook already knows all about him. *Leo Martinez. Yeah, I heard. Fast hands. Good hockey IQ.* Then, into the pause: *Also heard he's bi.* Finn's coffee goes over the rim of the cup. What Finn will not say to his oldest friend over a cafeteria table is the actual sentence, which is that there is a new guy on his line, that he cannot stop looking at him, and that he is afraid he knows exactly why. Leo has done the harder part already. He is out, he is the first openly queer player to share a shift with Finn, and he has no intention of shrinking to make anybody's locker room easier. He also notices, faster than Finn would like, that this particular linemate treats him differently from the rest of the room. Then Jensen Ahlgren starts paying attention. Jensen who is in the parking lot. Jensen who mentions the name of Finn's building out loud, just to watch it land. Jensen who has a phone and a plan and is entirely willing to spend both. An anonymous number keeps texting Leo. *Someone who wants to destroy Finn.* So what should be a hockey season, a first line finding its chemistry and a team chasing something, becomes a question about who gets to hold the story: the man with the photographs, or the two players who could take the room's temperature themselves and tell the truth first. A closed-door hockey romance between two teammates, about an inherited silence, a threat that runs on other people's shame, and a Cup lifted with two sets of hands on it.
