About this book
He was supposed to be the quiet one. Thirteen years of rinks from Duluth to Des Moines to a concrete box in Hartford, and the whole arrangement depended on nobody asking him a direct question.
*You see the hit last night?*
Cole Bergstrom does not look up from his skate laces. *Saw it.*
*Clean hit.* Logan's voice carries over the locker room hum, the thud of bags, sticks clattering into racks, somebody's pregame hip-hop droning underneath it all. *Textbook shoulder. Kid folded like laundry.*
Cole pulls the lace tight, loops it, ties it. His fingers know the rhythm. There is a frayed spot near the eyelet, the same spot it always frays, and he will replace it Thursday.
*Ref saw it different.*
Logan laughs, that short bark that means he is setting a hook. *Ref's blind. Ask Rick, he had the angle from the bench.*
Cole's hands pause. Just a breath.
Rick was supposed to be taping sticks in the equipment room. Rick is not supposed to be watching plays at all. Eleven seasons with this organisation, long enough to become part of the furniture, and now his name is in a sentence it has no business being in.
What follows: a coach with nothing left to lose, a rink the two of them both surrender, something kept under a jersey that was never meant to be found, a bet that nearly ends everything, a night they almost manage to trust each other, and a story he cannot untell once it is out.
*He kept a place during road trips. Said he kept his fishing gear there.*
*Fishing gear.*
*He lied about a lot of things.*
One frayed lace. One name in the wrong sentence. One woman who keeps asking anyway.
*The only thing worth sacrificing for is love. Not a roster spot. Not a paycheck. Not a trophy. The rest is just noise.*
The cameras keep flashing. He does not look at them once.
