Cassian Vale promoted me to the executive floor on my thirtieth day. I think he promoted me because he wanted me on it. He is the most private man in the city and the least subtle, which is a combination I did not think was possible until he bought the building next to my apartment and mentioned it in passing. He clears my calendar. He reroutes my car. He is possessive the way weather is — everywhere, and not up for negotiation. I'm not naive. I asked about the woman who had this office before me.
