The Coach's Secret

A puck on the centre dot, black rubber scuffed white, sitting there like a period at the end of a sentence nobody wants to read. Alex Kowalski stands at the boards with his arms crossed and watches eighteen boys in red and white skate lazy circles on ice that already looks tired. *"Pick it up,"* he says. Not loud. He has never had to be loud. Nine years as head coach of the Eastbrook Eagles, in a town that treats high school hockey like the only thing keeping Lake Superior from swallowing it.
