About this book

Her father's rule is three sentences long. *Never get involved. Never be the target. Your job is to deliver and disappear.* So Rosa walks the pier in the October wind off the East River, past crates of Canadian whiskey and men who pretend not to see her, and hands the envelope to the dock foreman. The transaction is clean, and in twenty minutes she will be home. Then the first shot comes from the water and punches a hole through a parked Packard, and a second comes off a warehouse roof, and a stranger lands bleeding in her passenger seat. She cannot take him to a hospital. She cannot take him home, because Aunt Francesca would call her father and the man would be in the river before sunrise. So she drives three blocks, pulls into the alley behind St. Catherine's, and drags him into a building that stopped being a speakeasy years ago, where the medical kit is still hidden behind the false panel in the confessional. *"You're in a church," Rosa said. "Don't bleed on the altar."* His suit is cheap and off-the-rack. His shoes are hand-stitched Italian leather. His hands have no calluses on them at all. He gives her a name, Matteo Rossi, and a reason for being in Moretti territory, and a street address that gives him away, because Rosa grew up on those blocks and he only memorized the map. What he really is takes longer, and arrives as a cufflink catching the light: a tiny eagle, a shield. Her father keeps files on every agent who has ever breathed near Little Italy. By then Rosa has reasons of her own. Luca Santangelo has been pushing her father toward a merger with the O'Keefe outfit and doing quieter things besides. What would finish Luca is the same object that would finish Vittorio Moretti: a ledger holding years of transactions and every name attached to them. So she kneels in a confessional and offers to help a federal agent steal her father's books. It ends in a basement chapel, then in a half-cleaned restaurant after the guests have gone, with the chairs stacked and one candle burning on the bar, a plain gold ring that spent three years stitched into a jacket lining, and a second ledger locked in a safe that she has not mentioned to her husband. A closed-door mafia romance set on the Lower Manhattan waterfront, about a daughter raised to disappear and the wounded man she should have left on the dock.
