About this book
*"You're thirty-eight thousand in arrears."*
Leo Hartwell takes that call standing at the registration desk of his grandmother's inn, watching a ceiling stain spread and drip onto the welcome mat. Six months delinquent plus interest, on a building that has been hemorrhaging money since before his father died. The west wing needs a full tear-off. July bookings are up twelve percent, which is not enough. Thirty days, then foreclosure.
His cousin Samir walks in with empanadas and a plan B nobody asked for. Then the man who wants the building arrives.
Rafe Delgado works for Cascade Living Group, which has spent six months quietly acquiring properties along the Oregon coast and in Port Blaine specifically. He is direct about it in front of the town council: the Hartwell Inn is *"the keystone. Without it, our entire development plan collapses."* He has read the financials. Three years in the red. Water in the foundation. An electrical system from the nineteen-seventies.
He also knows this coastline better than a stranger should. He came here as a boy, on a bus, alone. His brother Daniel found a cove that summer and drew a map of it. Rafe wears Daniel's worn leather bracelet and does not take it off.
Ruth Hartwell has run the inn for forty years and sits in the third row in her best cardigan while the vote happens. Maya Okoro has a three-year business plan and an eco-tourism angle. Samir has a photograph, a debt of fifty thousand dollars to a man in Portland, and eventually a lawyer and a petition claiming a share of the property.
And under the east wing there is water coming up through volcanic basalt, mineral-rich and warm, which the Coquille used long before anyone thought to build an inn on top of it.
What Leo cannot work out is whether Rafe at that podium is a betrayal or a role he agreed to play.
This is a small-town MM romance on the Oregon coast: a foreclosure clock, a corporate acquisition, a dead brother's map, a hot spring, and a lighthouse that keeps sweeping the water whatever else is happening.
