The Rookie's Confession

The clasps on Lee Bancroft's station jacket have been loose for three weeks. He spends the whole bus ride pinching them shut and letting them spring open, over and over, like a prayer he does not quite believe in. Seven stops on Grey Harbor Transit Route 7, then a half-mile jog up Harbor Road past the lobster shacks still shuttered for breakfast. He is ten minutes late, which in firehouse math might as well be an hour. Captain Declan O'Shea is at the front bumper of Engine 5, arms crossed, grey eyes on the digital clock above the turnout board. He does not raise his voice. *Then you know what 06:45 means.* Lee is on gear maintenance. Full inventory. Report to Chen. Lee is twenty-four and already running out of chances. He was awake at three in the morning with smoke in his lungs and a child's voice in his ears, the same nightmare every time, the ceiling coming down in sheets of flame. His father's voice comes with it: *You're a fisherman, Leo. You've got the hands for it and the blood for it, and you're gonna throw that away to go play hero?* Jake Orton plants himself in Lee's path and calls him princess loudly enough for half the station to hear. Declan catalogues details the way other men collect baseball cards: the way you hold a tool, the tremor in your hand when you are scared, the lie hiding behind your teeth. On the memorial board is a name. John Estrada, twenty-nine, a wife and a daughter. The paper mill fire, three stories, chemical storage, five firefighters trapped and one who did not come out. Estrada carried a child to the ladder himself, handed her down, and went back in for the foreman. Declan was the man on the ground who caught her. And somewhere in this station is a phone with messages on it about a hose coupling on Engine 5, and what gets added to a man's balance if he will not loosen it. An MM firefighter romance about a rookie who has built his life on one version of the worst night of it, a captain slow to trust for reasons carved into a board in his own hallway, and the difference between freezing and being broken; closed-door.
