Borrowed Vows

Elena hasn't spoken to her stepbrother in twelve years. She plans to keep it that way. Then her stepfather starts dying, the Andreou territory starts fracturing, and a man in a black sedan starts following her home from the hospital. Dimitri's solution arrives as a marriage licence with her signature forged on it and a flat promise: two years, then a quiet divorce. She hates him. She also realises, three weeks in, that he is the only person on the planet who has ever paid attention to what she's actually like. When the test comes back positive, he finds it in the bin. He doesn't ask. He doesn't leave. He starts keeping score of her shifts on the refrigerator. Then the shooting starts, and Elena learns what her husband is willing to do to keep a promise he never actually made.
