Tax forms explained: W-9, W-8BEN, and W-8BEN-E

If Chiify asks for a tax form, the right one depends on where you are and whether you publish as a person or a company. This is general guidance — confirm specifics with a tax professional.
Which form is which
- W-9 — for US persons (citizens, residents, US entities). It provides your taxpayer ID.
- W-8BEN — for non-US individuals. It certifies you are a foreign person and can claim any tax-treaty benefit your country has, which may lower withholding.
- W-8BEN-E — the same idea for a non-US company/entity.
Why it matters
The correct form on file can reduce or remove withholding on cross-border royalty income and keeps your payouts from being held. See does Chiify withhold tax.
What to do
- Pick the form that matches your situation.
- Complete it accurately (a treaty claim usually needs a foreign tax ID).
- Keep a copy for your records.
If you are unsure which applies, an accountant can confirm in minutes — and you only do this once.
